## Definition

A piece of metal not intended as a means of payment, usually rounded, with an inscription and/or figurative representations for - commemorative purposes or - to honor special achievements; colloquially, in the first case, usually called a commemorative coin (a coin-like object in metal with no monetary value, generally in the form of a commemorative minting). - Re-struck curant coins which used to be in circulation but which today - either are no longer legal tender or - although theoretically having legal tender properties, are only used as an investment object because of their high material value, mainly in the form of gold and silver, such as gold dollar, Vreneli (= old Swiss gold coin). - Newly minted pieces, often in the form of coins made of precious metal and denominated in a currency (also EUR), which lack the property of legal tender, but are nevertheless often offered as such. - The distinction between medal and coin is not clear. In everyday language, all pieces mentioned under and are usually also called coins. According to EU law, medals may only be produced or distributed in a form that eliminates the risk of confusion with euro coins. - See bullion coin, validation, memorial money, precious metal, gold price, contorniaten, missils, coin, numismatics.
