## Definition

The temporary suspension of all operations related to a security traded on the exchange. This occurs whenever serious market disruptions have occurred. Suspension is initiated by the stock exchange management on its own initiative or at the request of a listed corporation (suspended trading is temporary halt in trading of a security to correct serious imbalance between buy and sell orders. Such an imbalance is frequently caused by speculation resulting from an important news announcement, such as a worse than anticipated earnings report, a merger announcement, a significant innovation or major legal problems). - See discontinuation, listing, suspended.
