## Definition

Regulation by a supervisory authority requiring banks to have their borrowers' creditworthiness (credit ranking of the debtors) assessed by an independent rating agency, i.e. not internally. In this context, it is also necessary to subject the rating agencies to international supervision. After all, the fact that practically three firms and their few dozen analysts are in charge of managing hundreds of billions of euros raises many questions. - See credit rating category, minimum risk management requirements, rating agency, risk management. - Cf. Deutsche Bundesbank Monthly Report of April 2001, p. 21 (on the five criteria that a rating agency must meet), Deutsche Bundesbank Monthly Report of January 2009, p. 65 (methodology of rating models).
