## Definition

In financial parlance - the Canadian one-dollar coin (a gold-colored bronze-plated coin, introduced in 1987; it bears images of a common loon, a well-known Canadian bird, on the reverse, and of Queen Elizabeth II on the face). - Government bonds of the Canadian federation. - During the Greek crisis in spring 2010, investment advisors recommended buying such securities. Admittedly, the market for these securities is relatively narrow; in June 2010, it had a volume of CAD 380 billion (about EUR 303 billion). This is less than one tenth of the market for US bonds. Even the - only partially valid - reference to the CAD as a "raw material based currency" for Canada's bonds does not change this fact. - By the way, the term Loonie - also as a nickname for Canadians in general - is not to be associated with "crazy" (in this case written: loony), as can often be read. Rather, it derives from the image of a loon (in zoological classification a member of the genus Gavia, family Gaviidae), a swimming and diving bird common in Canada in many species, depicted on the back of the CAD. - See Aussie, Kiwi.
