## Definition

A sum paid in earlier times by sovereign decree for the killing of a raven or a jackdaw (daw) or crow (crow). The head of the killed animal had to be handed in to the local authority - usually the mayor or the bailiff as the administrator appointed by the state authority - in exchange for a receipt. The bill could then be exchanged for cash at the appropriate treasury. - See cobra effect, mousing money.
