## Definition

Finely drawn patterns in the form of parallel lines (ribbon guilloche) or intertwined geometric curves (wave guilloche), sometimes shaped into a specific ornamental pattern (ornament guilloche, as on ECB banknotes). Printed on banknotes, cards and securities, they are intended to make counterfeiting more difficult. The extent to which they fulfill this purpose today is disputed. - See Counterfeit protection.
