## Definition

In Islamic banking, this is understood to mean an interest-free, earmarked loan to the poor. As a rule, the granting of such a loan requires the recommendation of a religious authority; the loans are also usually secured. As a rule, they are not granted for consumptive purposes, but mostly for the (re)construction of houses and apartments, for medical treatment of the breadwinner (breadwinner: breadwinner of a family) and, more recently, often also as a monthly allowance for the acquisition of manual training. - See ijara, istisna, mudaraba, murabaha, musharaka, salam, sukuk, prohibition of interest.
