## Definition

Requirement that a financial product may only be placed on the market if it has first - been examined by an authority and - been expressly released for general circulation or - for purchase by specific groups of investors. The procedure for the approval of pharmaceuticals is the inspiration for this idea. - The intention is to rule out systemic risks from the outset, which can be triggered by opaque papers, as has been shown in view of the subprime crisis. Such an approval process is generally supported by regulators and central banks, but is viewed rather cautiously by academics and practitioners. - See Rating Agency.
