## Definition

A continuous survey of chief purchasers, originally launched in the USA in 1982, with regard to various variables - such as order backlog, purchasing volumes, purchase prices, delivery times, inventories - which are combined according to a weighting scheme to form a meaningful index. Corresponding surveys were then adopted in other countries and generally introduced by leading business associations; they are regarded as a fairly reliable barometer of economic activity.
