## Definition

In older documents, a common game token of the time, namely a stamped metal piece made of brass - formerly produced mainly in Nuremberg and Fürth - or also made of silver and gold - mostly used in France - to replace money when playing. There are also known specimens made of carved ivory and other material. - The word comes from the Spanish (tantos, plural to: tanto = number, quantity). Tantes are today a coveted collector's item.
