## Definition

A Spanish word that, strictly speaking, translates as loan. In South America, however, it now also has the ugly secondary meaning of a forced donation. North Americans, Asians and Europeans who are considered rich are often enough asked insistently for a préstamo by employees in government offices and even by nursing staff in hospitals. Directly, formally is asked indeed only for loan of money. Therefore, it is difficult for the anti-corruption authorities (which are said to be infiltrated by corrupt elements themselves) to intervene against this bad habit. But the money, which is often borrowed explicitly for only a few days, is of course never paid back, and one must refrain from asking for it. Quite a few servants earn a considerable extra income in this way. This, in turn, keeps many investors from getting involved in Latin America. - See Hand money, Douceur, Kapplaken, Peep, Schmiergeld, Trinkgeld.
