## Definition

Large German bank acquired by Commerzbank AG in January 2009. Exactly 137 years after its foundation, the bank had literally gambled away its existence. All reserves had been used up; the core capital ratio had dwindled to the barely permissible but not nearly sufficient level of four percent. The sole shareholder, Allianz Versicherung AG, headquartered in Munich, had to pump billions of euros into the bank. - For too long, Allianz let Dresdner Bank's investment bankers have their way, until billions of euros in losses kept piling up. - The takeover of Dresdner Bank by Allianz is also considered a model of a failed merger. Instead of a "one-stop financial service provider," the two parts ran side by side. Finally, the taxpayer paid for the sale of Dresdner Bank to Commerzbank by having to support the now larger Commerzbank with 18 billion euros, after Dresdner Bank kept piling up new, previously unknown losses in the billions (piled up). - See Bankassekuranz, bank merger year, German, portability. - Cf. BaFin Annual Report 2010, p. 150 (integration risks in the takeover of Dresdner Bank by Commerzbank).
