## Definition

Sum of all assets - including precious metals and real estate - held by an economic entity (the total of investments held by an institution or an individual). - In a narrower sense, the total of securities held by an economic entity and usually managed by a bank; in German often also called Depot, more rarely Basket. - In Germany, since around 1990, the English term "portfolio" with the plural "portfolios" and "portfolien" has replaced the French term "portefeuille" which had been used until then. - See custody account, epuration, investment, portfolio insurance, assets. - Cf. Monthly Report of the Deutsche Bundesbank of July 2004, p. 36 (for the composition of portfolios of German private individuals).
