## Definition

Special form of loan in which a life insurance policy is deposited as collateral. The surrender value stated in the policy then also determines the maximum loan amount. As a rule, lenders therefore waive the credit check that would otherwise be required for granting a loan. Lenders include the insurance companies themselves as well as banks and companies in the secondary market for life insurance policies. The legal basis for the policy loan is §169 VVG. - See Policy Exchange, Life Insurance, Secondary Market.
