## Definition

The extent and frequency of price fluctuations in the money market as a whole or in individual money market segments. It is important for the central bank neither to create nor to increase uncertainty through its monetary policy. Monetary policy wants to and should send signals, but should not create volatility-generating noise. - See stock market volatility, Bollinger bands, code words, domino effect, financial market stress, fundamental analysis, money market segments, headline hysteria, open-mouth policy, Sharpe ratio, signaling effect, fuzziness, constructive, stealth policy, tracking error, variance, volatility risk, foreshadow effects, cyclicality. - Cf. ECB Monthly Bulletin of February 2008, pp. 79 ff. (basic principles; measuring volatility in the money market; overviews), Deutsche Bundesbank Monthly Bulletin of August 2014, pp. 31 f.
