## Definition

Generally, the transfer of an amount back by the bank when a payment has been revoked by the customer or a debit has been disputed for other reasons. - In credit card business - the reversal of a credit card transaction, - in which the issuer of the card reclaims a payment from the merchant in whole or in part, - because the cardholder disputes the legitimacy of the charge (the cardholder is disputing the transaction, in-whole or in-part). - In the case of online transactions on the Internet, the possibility of chargeback represents a very high risk for the merchant; because the merchant cannot influence the customer's objection. This is because he does not have a written contract with which the credit card transaction can be documented, and it is generally almost impossible to check the transaction accurately. Moreover, the cost of cancelling the credit card transaction is borne by the merchant. - There are many considerations with regard to such misuse of cards; for the merchant, appropriate insurance may ultimately be the cheapest way to date. - See close-out, mistrade, stop order, reversal rate, payment.
