## Definition

A levy that used to be collected from residents for the upkeep of the curtilage. - In northern Germany, the quickset was and still is a living fence up to five meters wide, which was cut every third or fourth year. Originally, a knick probably served merely as a field boundary, but then also as a defensive hedge against the erosion of soil by storms and as a protective wall against enemy attacks in the event of war. - Today, there are an estimated 50,000 kilometers of kink in northern Germany. Its maintenance is partly stipulated in nature conservation regulations because the kink has considerable economic relevance, especially as a nesting site for many bird species useful for agriculture. - See dam fee, dike fee, mooring fee, set-aside premium, hardes fee.
