## Definition

In old documents, (high-)interest loans that colonels - at that time generally said of military commanders of more than 4,000 to 5,000 men - lent to merchants and, more rarely, to private households, usually on a short-term basis. The money lent was money from the sovereign's treasury (sovereign was chest), which was intended for the punctual payment of soldiers. By extending the payment of the salaries to the soldiers, the lords were able to make a profit on their own account through loan transactions. Although such transactions were expressly prohibited, they seem to have been common in the armies of many states, according to reports. - See Dänengeld, Festungsgeld, Heergeld, Hussengeld, Kavalleriegeld, Knickgeld, Kontribution, Manubien, Marschroutengeld, Parallel Banking, Quartiergeld, Rockgeld, Satisfaktionsgeld, Schattenbank, Türkengeld.
