## Definition

An insurance company that - due to a fixed business policy - targets only a certain group (e.g. rice farmers) or - due to insufficient demand for insurance services is limited to a small number of policyholders. - Experience has shown that these institutions, which are frequently found in countries of the so-called Third World - and are advocated by well-meaning groups in industrialized countries - are easily threatened by (fraudulently induced) insolvency, especially if no supervisory authority in the country concerned monitors the business activity. - See supervision, insurance companies, insurance contract. - Cf. BaFin Annual Report 2006, p. 64 (Roundtable on Microinsurers in the Third World).
