## Definition

A buying or selling of various currencies on the international foreign exchange markets, conducted by the U.S.-based Hungarian financial magnate and hedge fund manager (proprietor of Quantum Fund) Georges [György] Soros, aimed at making profits through future changes in foreign exchange rates. Among other things, Soros forced England to devalue the GBP on September 16, 1992. The Quantum Fund raked in an estimated $1 billion in profits on this exposure alone. England had refused to allow the long overdue devaluation of the GBP within the European Exchange Rate System. Soros recognized the untenability of this decision, made against all economic reason. - Soros' dealings helped, not least, to change the minds of many who were initially suspicious of the European Monetary Union and to support a common European currency that was hardly susceptible to currency speculation. - See hedge funds, speculation, speculation, destructive.
