## Definition

Founded in 1772 as a state-owned company with originally very broad business activities, since 1845 a pure banking house, renamed "Preussische Staatsbank (Seehandlung)" in 1918, liquidated in 1947 with the dissolution of Prussia and the remaining assets transferred to a foundation with the purpose of awarding scholarships to writers from Eastern Europe. This institute played an important role in Prussia's economic history, especially in trade promotion and internal colonization (internal colonisation: the efforts with regard to economic and social improvement of underdeveloped provinces within Prussia). - See Land Credit Institute, Melioration Credit, Settlement Credit.
