## Definition

In older documents, the price for very high quality round timber (= schopen), preferably maple, from which the scoop cutter made scoops and ladles. - Because of the high price of maple wood, spoonmakers often depended on birchwood. A wooden spoon made of birchwood becomes dirty-grey and rough with time. Goods made of maple, on the other hand, gradually turn golden yellow and become very smooth. - Wooden spoons were common in private households until about 1820, when cheap tinware from wheeling machines replaced wooden spoons on the market. - See weather money.
