## Definition

Widely used coin in early antiquity; the name denotes a former Hebrew, Phoenician, and Babylonian weight. Many ancient documents, including especially the Old Testament writings, express value in this monetary unit. Excavations show a varying precious metal content - usually silver, but more rarely gold - of the sekel. The weight of the found pieces also varies considerably, which indicates that the coin has changed over the centuries. The exact determination of the monetary value of a sekel at that time and thus its purchasing power in domestic trade as well as the conversion into other contemporary monetary units (exchange rate; external value of the sekel) has therefore become a special field of numismatics. - It was valid from about 100 B.C. in principle 60 sekel = 1 mine and 60 minae = 1 talent - See Amalfiner, Dareiko, drachma, Florentine, coin, coinage system, Roman, obolus, samarkander, stater, Urukagina rule.
