## Definition

Administrative authority for the debts of the Federal Republic of Germany, based in Bad Homburg (Taunus). The authority - which until the end of 2001 was called the "Bundesschuldenverwaltung" (Federal Debt Administration) - is responsible for - notarizing the loans taken out by the Federal Government and its special funds for the purpose of issuance on the capital market and derivative transactions concluded on the basis of the respective existing authorizations (Art. 115 of the Basic Law), and - managing and servicing the loans in accordance with banking regulations (debt service). It is also - responsible for the certification of the warranties, sureties, guarantees and participation obligations assumed by the Federation and its special funds in favor of international financial institutions. The authority - maintains the debt register of the Confederation and takes care of investors' deposits free of charge. - In mid-2004, the agency - which costs the federal budget about EUR 30 million a year - managed only about one percent of total federal debt in individual debt register accounts held by private creditors, and it also sold only about one percent of gross borrowing in the form of federal securities. As a result, on August 1, 2006, the agency was incorporated into the Federal Republic of Germany Finance Agency. - See Bundesrepublik Deutschland Finanzagentur GmbH, Public Debt. - Cf. the respective Annual Report of the Deutsche Bundesbank, where a tabular overview of issuance in the relevant calendar year is provided.
