## Definition

Cheque: Security containing an unconditional payment instruction from a customer of a credit institution to its bank (drawee) to pay a specified sum to a third party (beneficiary, remittee; drawee) at sight (payable when presented). In the case of a collection only cheque (cheque for deposit only; bank [transfer] cheque), payment is not made in cash but by crediting the beneficiary. - The check as a means of payment has lost its importance in most countries. In Germany, payments by check accounted for a total of 0.19 percent of payment transactions in 2012. - See Platzscheck, Postkartenscheck, Reisescheck.
