## Definition

Formerly a payment for strong men (tugboats; haulers, treedlers; towers) pulling a ship behind them by ropes (tightropes) from the shore (from the towpath; towpath); bugsieren: from bow = front end of ship. - If the ship pullers were mounted (tower on horseback; Leinreiter), the bugsiergeld increased accordingly. - A relatively high expense incurred when a ship had to be towed-up by rowing boats in the absence of any wind. - Costs incurred when a larger ship has to be towed away by one or more smaller ships. - Also said today for paying for motor vessels to tow a barge ahead of them. - See Halage, Rheinoctroi, Triftgeld, Wassermaut.
