## Definition

A term that is frequently used, but which is very broad in terms of content (connotation: number of characteristics that define the term) and scope (partial concepts that are to be assigned to the term) and is therefore difficult to define precisely in logical terms. It refers to the totality of all legal, technical, social and organizational foundations that are necessary for the operation and development of an economy. Examples include a well-ordered legal system, educational institutions of all kinds, communication channels, health care, sewage treatment plants, administrative facilities, transport routes on land, on water and in the air, but also the trouble-free supply of energy in general and electricity in particular. Investments in infrastructure are therefore extremely important for overall economic development. - See infrastructure capital, social capital, wealth, social. - Cf. Monthly Report of the Deutsche Bundesbank of October 2009, p. 15 ff. (government infrastructure investment since 1970; overviews).
