## Definition

The share of inputs purchased from abroad in the production of export goods. - The import content of German goods exports calculated in this way was around 44 percent in 2009; the trend is upward. Just under half of goods imports came from the EU in 2009; the largest suppliers during this period were the Netherlands and France. - Central banks monitor this indicator primarily with regard to the balance of payments and exchange rate of their own currency. - See Balassa index, research ratio, trade balance, degree of openness, structural change, terms of trade, unit value ratio. - Cf.
